Spending $100,000

We are learning the value of money to help us with place value. Over the last couple of weeks we have looked at spending $100 and $1,000. We have realised that the more money we have we need to look at items that are more expensive to help us spend all our money. For home learning this week we will be spending $100,000, use the computer to help you. You might want to take your family on a holiday, buy a new car - it is up to you.

50c Fundraiser

The 50c fundraiser is proving very popular with the whole school. Food is flying out of the door and some students are going to a lot of effort to make things look great.

Koraunui School Visit

Today we were lucky to have Koraunui School come and visit us. They performed a number of items for us and were fabulous. We recognised one of the Kapa Haka songs they sang, which Mrs Prichard has been trying to teach us.

Milo Cricket

The weather was nice to us and we were able to get out with Tama and Pip and learn some of the milo cricket skills. It was great fun.

Around our school

The clock is split into twelths.
One third of these rings are orange.

What has cake got to do with fractions?

What a yummy cake!! Mrs Prichard first cut the cake into 4 pieces and we had to say how many pebbles were on 3/4 of the cake (there were 16 pebbles altogether). We then had to share the cake evenly into 26.

What plastics can we recycle?

We are looking at recycling, reusing and reducing. We know that plastic can be recycled but not all of it. Look for a recycling symbol on the bottom of your plastic. If it has a 1 or 2 on it that means it can be recycled. We have some questions which we want to find the answers to.

Can the plastic on our chairs be recycled?

Can gladwrap be recycled?

Can museli bar wrappers be recycled?

Can you recycle computer plastic?

Can plastic toys be recyled, such as lego?

Can cellotape be recycled?

Helping each other

During our whanau grouping session today two students decided to see how high they could make a tower. It grew much bigger than this.

I hope everyone is behaving!

What has Mrs Prichard done to be handcuffed?

We enjoyed having Officer Paul and Officer Josh with us today to talk to us about police dogs. Cody showed us a few things she could do when on duty.

What do I need to do this week at home?

We all have our basic facts sheet at home so know what to work on next. Just spend 5 minutes a day working on your next basic fact. Remember to read every night and talk to someone about what you have read. This week discuss with your parents why it is important to learn to swim.

What are these?

Our creations are evolving. Who is that behind the mask?

Artsplash

Students involved in the choir from Savvy 7 and Divine 9 have had an exciting couple of days with Artsplash rehearsal and performance this week. Everyone was on such a buzz and it was a wonderful experience for all involved.

We have been really busy over the last term with our art but what are we making? It is taking a while to do. Keep watching for developments.

Homelearning

Homelearning sheets will not be coming home this term, instead there will be a weekly note on the blog to say what your homelearning is. Every week there will be weekly spelling, basic facts and reading (you know what these all are). This week I would like you to work with your buddy and come up with some Homonyms (words that sound alike but are spelt differently and have different meanings). I would like you to go on google docs and work with your buddy on these, writing them into sentences. Don't forget to share the document with me and your buddy.
Keep working on your passions too.

Rubbish, rubbish, rubbish. What's it all about?

"Waste Audit," what does that mean Mrs P? After lunch we looked at what rubbish we had in our classroom bins, school bins and lunch boxes. We tipped it all out and sorted it into groups of rubbish. Can you explain to your parents how we measured it?

Trip to the Air Force Band

Yesterday the whole school went on a trip to the St James Theatre in Wellington to listen to the Air Force Band. It was fabulous. The St James Theatre is huge and we were right up the top, some of us didn't feel that comfortable being so high.

They played lots of music we knew, theme songs from movies and TV programmes. The best part was when we were asked to copy the conductor when he was not looking. It was so funny as he kept stopping and turning round and of course we had to stop too. Before we knew it we were back on the bus and heading back to school.

Having fun with measurement

On Tuesday for maths we went out into the playground and drew pirate ships with chalk. We have been looking at how long a metre is, so armed with a metre ruler we set out to draw our large pirate ships. The length was 10 metres which meant that we had to use most of the concreted area within the school grounds to ensure we could fit them all in. Once we had finished drawing our ships we were able to add wheels, pirates, flag etc. It was so much fun, thank goodness the weather was nice.

Fabulous trip to Civic Square

"I've been here before but never looked up." This was one of the comments we heard from the students while on our trip to Wellington during the last week of term 2. We thoroughly enjoyed exploring the Civic Square looking at the sculptures.

Goals

What have you been doing to work on your term 2 goal? The holidays are almost upon us and you will have two weeks away from school. How can you include your goal into your holiday activities. Perhaps you are working on place value so you could help Mum or Dad with the shopping and tell them how much the groceries cost and how much change they will get. You might be working on ensuring all your sentences start with a capital letter, keep a diary of what you got up to in the holidays and share it when you get back. Be creative to make your goals interesting and something you want to do.

You can't buy this at the supermarket.

What do you think empathy is?

Scarecrow week

What a fabulous week we had last week being creative with things that can be reused. We thoroughly enjoyed building our scarecrows and Mrs Ps group even decided that we needed corn to go along with our scarecrows.

What is Google Applications?

On Wednesday Mrs Campbell introduced us to Google Applications. We had lots of fun sending each other documents and chatting. We were told this is very safe and can only chat and communicate with people within our school. Once we become more familiar with its use we will be using this tool to share ideas and collaborate with each other during class. Mrs Prichard is excited about being able to put a task up and sharing it with a reading group and then off we go. We are very much looking forward to having some more laptops so that we do not have to go to Room 5 to work on computers.

Lots of practice

Since the beginning of the term we have been training for our cross country which is on Thursday next week. At the beginning of the term some of us were struggling to do one lap without stopping, not any more. Don't we look good?

Learning origami

On Friday we were lucky enough to have Sheena's Mum, Ikumi come and teach us how to do origami. The first thing we learnt was the Ninja Star. We thoroughly enjoyed throwing these about the playground at lunchtime. The next thing was the balloon. Hopefully we will learn some more things next time Ikumi comes.

It's cool to keep safe

What a great session we had today, learning all about keeping safe. We know how to keep safe on a motorbike. Today we learnt that it is ok to tell adults about things that make us feel uncomfortable.
What is so vauluable in the box? Me, I am very valuable and need to keep myself safe.

What are we doing?

We spent time outside collecting bark and leaves. Once back in the classroom we did some rubbings. Mrs Prichard said that we were going to make a tree, but how?

More Homelearning

Great artwork, a lot of work going on at home. Everyone seems to be thoroughly enjoying being able to choose what they do for homelearning.

Look what we have done for homelearning

We enjoyed having people share their homelearning with us. There has been a lot of work happening at home. People have made comic strips, books and painted. Was there anything you saw that you would like to try next time?

Terrific tennis

On the 22nd of March 2010 Normandale school had tennis. The coaches names were Simon and Paul. We started off with some warm ups like jumping in and out of the lines and jogging on the spot. My favorite thing was playing tennis with the palms of our hands. Simon thought we were good at it so he told us to step back one step. I'm looking fordward to tomorrow when we can use the raquets and the nets. Today was fun but i know tomorrow will be even better!

Wild, wet and wonderful

Pictures speak a thousand words. We have had a fantastic water day today. We had many choices of activities - swimming pool, bubbles, sprinkler, water play, water slide, water pistols and water obstacle course. The day started off looking pretty gloomy and we were wondering if we would indeed be able to have our water day. By morning tea, the sun was out and although a little windy it was certianly warming up.
Yippee no excuses now.

Managing Self

This term we are looking at Managing Self, to make it easier for us the teachers have broken it down and we are looking at one aspect of it each week.
So far we have looked at being organised, taking responsibility, listening and now positive attitude. How do you think you are doing with these so far? Make a comment or perhaps your parents would like to comment on whether they have seen you working on these at home.

Wall wisher is finally here

Please post a sticky on wall wisher saying what you are enjoying about Rowan of Rin.

Tuesday, February 16, 2010

Rowan of Rin

We have a riddle to solve in the story - please help us out.

"Let arms be still and voices low,
A million eyes watch as you go.
The silken door your pathway ends,
There fire and light will be your friends.
Then see yourself as others may,
And catch noon's eye to clear your way."

Enjoying plays

Room 9 have a group of girls who are spending their spare time making up wonderful plays. Alex said "the chocolate cake girls were funny when they annoyed the chef." Alannah thought "the wizzard's accent was great."

Watch this space, Wall Wisher coming

What do you think a wall wisher could be? Keep an eye out as it will be arriving before the end of the week. I wonder who the first person to add to it will be.
